ANGEL’S FLIGHT

Chapter 9

Avril woke to the intrusive glare of the sun rays beaming through the window. Wincing, she resisted the urge to turn over and return to deep, blissful sleep. Instead, she pushed herself to a sitting position, working the fogginess from her muddled brain.

The red digital numbers on the nightstand alarm clock read eleven-forty. This reminded her what she had been doing last night, all night, and with who.

“Drew?”

Throwing back the covers, Avril quickly rose and padded over to the sitting area and looked around. The blanket on the empty couch was neatly folded. No sign of its occupant anywhere.

“Drew?” she called, checking the dressing area. But even the connecting bathroom was open and empty.

He left?

Why would he..?

Alarmed, she quickly checked the door. The chair propped against the handle last night was indeed off to the side, and there were no other signs of forced entry. Since any noise would have instantly roused her, Drew must have quietly left of his own accord.

Without so much as a goodbye.

Confused, gaping, Avril plopped down on the couch.

It didn’t make sense. Why would Drew leave without a word? Last night they had been allies, partners, comrade Wolves against the evil Coyotes. He needed her.

Or so she naïvely thought.

After all, she didn’t know the man from Adam. He had been nothing more than an attractive stranger who had taken advantage of her help, then callously took his leave when she was of no more use to him.

Memories of their conversation last night froze the blood in her veins.

“That’s a vicious lie! I know Aunt Isabella—”

“You mean in the entire five minutes that you’ve known her,” he said.

And how long did she know this Drew Dawson before she completely trusted his every word and promised to help and protect him under Lupus Auxilium?

Minutes?

Seconds?

He was an admitted Wolf Pack traitor, an outlaw, dangerous rogue. How could she so easily believe he was the innocent party?

“I find very few people are innocent of everything, angel.”

Including him, so it seemed.

So it was all a lie then, Avril reasoned. Drew’s heartbreaking story of love and betrayal to gain her schoolgirl sympathy. There probably wasn’t even any teenage boy being held prisoner on the estate.

What about the evidence in the stable that he showed you? her mind questioned.

Easily planted, Avril countered. Drew had been in the area earlier. She first spotted him in the adjacent outbuilding, and he had purposely approached her last night in the garden when she was alone.

Why, though? What purpose would he have in risking his own safety to sneak into Hacienda del Rio undetected? A rogue Wolf in dangerous rival Coyote country.

Conveniently there at the same time as her own scheduled visit.

Avril’s stomach dropped as she replayed every step, every conversation they held last night.

God, how did she not guess it? His knowledge of the royal political powerplays had been too keen for someone from the working class.

A planted spy from a rival Pack then?

It had been the perfect chess game, using her as the unsuspecting and all too willing pawn.
